Gum depigmentation (Bleaching) is a cosmetic smile transformation that results in a lighter and more uniform color of the gums. We here at AOSG Dental offer a minimally invasive procedure that uses a laser to target and remove the dark spots, also known as melanocytes.
Melanocytes are cells which reside in the gums (the basal layer of the gingival epithelium). These cells produce melanin, which are pigments that cause dark spots on the gums and cheeks. This visible pigmentation is most often caused by genetic factors, but can also be caused by smoking and in some cases by long-term use of certain medications.
In as little as one visit we can target these spots with a dental laser and lighten, or “bleach”, these patches. The results could last up to 20 years to life.
